Due to upgrading works on the project “Upgrade of Gabčíkovo locks“ navigation through the Gabčíkovo weir will be cyclically suspended for nine hours daily from 28. 09. 2020 to 17. 01. 2021. The operation will be restricted on working days from 8:00 to 17:00 o´clock with exception of two weeks during Christmas holidays (from 19. 12. 2020 to 03. 01. 2021). Besides the above suspension, the left lock is in operation. Water of the right lock chamber is currently released, as the lock is being upgraded as the first part of the project.

One of the key parts of the European project  Upgrade of Gabčíkovo locks is also renovation of the underlay and renovation of seepages on the Intake structure of both locks. As Mr. Vladimír Kollár, Director General of VODOHOSPODÁRSKA VÝSTAVBA, ŠTÁTNY PODNIK (VV, š. p.) said, suspension of navigation is necessary to ensure security of works under water level and to follow technological procedure of works:

“Selected technological procedure requires works to be carried out by scuba divers in the so-called calm water, i. e. without flows which appear when locks are filled. The intake structure also serves for filling the left lock and therefore we had to find the way of how to enable appropriate conditions. We apologize for any inconvenience due to the restricted navigation. We believe that the ship captains and crews will enjoy a higher comfort of navigation after the upgrade of both locks,“ said Mr. Vladimír Kollár, Director General.

At the end of October 2020, restrictions will be revaluated and, if necessary, suspensions will be adjusted. VV, š. p. will inform about any changes in advance.
