On July 9, 2025, VODOHOSPODÁRSKA VÝSTAVBA, ŠTÁTNY PODNIK opened the summer season by launching excursion cruises through the Lock chambers of the Gabčíkovo Waterworks, creating a unique opportunity for the general public to experience education and relaxation in one.
The Lock chambers were modernized as part of the Project “Upgrade of Gabčíkovo Locks” co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility of the European Union.
The aim of the cruises is to raise awareness of the importance and necessity of water management structures and water transport. The aim is also to promote public interest in environmental education, stimulate interest in studying water management, and to give the public a look behind the scenes of the water management world, where state-of-the-art technology, the power of water, and precise engineering work come together.
The cruise through this unique technical work is operated by the Ondava commentary cruise ship (SVP) and offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the modernized navigation Lock chambers, their filling and emptying, and to feel their unmistakable atmosphere and grandness from a brand new perspective.
Cruises through the Lock chambers have become a great addition to the existing modern interactive Information Center and guided tours offered at the Gabčíkovo Hydroelectric Power Plant. Together, they create an attractive program for families, schools, and individual visitors.
