On Friday, June 5, 2026, the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic welcomed elementary and secondary school students to the ministry’s atrium to celebrate World Environment Day. The event also featured organizations under the Ministry of Environment, including VODOHOSPODÁRSKA VÝSTAVBA, STATE ENTERPRISE, which presented to visitors its activities and projects contributing to environmental protection and sustainable development, including the “Upgrade of Gabčíkovo Locks” project, co-funded by the Connecting Europe Facility of the European Union.

World Environment Day annually reminds us the importance of nature conservation and the need to seek new solutions for a sustainable future. The modernized Lock chambers of the Gabčíkovo Waterworks help ensure smooth and safe international navigation on the river Danube and support the use of inland waterway transport as a more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly mode of cargo transport, thereby contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, reducing traffic pressure on the road network, and the overall reduction of the environmental impacts of cargo transport in the Rhine – Danube TEN-T corridor.
